Romneya coulteri (Coulter's Matilija Poppy)

Coast, Foothill, Mountain, Desert/Transition

Romneya coulteri, commonly known as Coulter's Matilija Poppy, is a striking perennial shrub native to southern California and northern Baja California. This member of the Papaveraceae family is known for its large, showy flowers, often referred to as "fried egg flowers" due to their bright yellow centers surrounded by crinkly white petals, which can reach up to 9 inches in diameter. The plant features deeply lobed, bluish-green leaves and typically grows to a height of 6 to 8 feet. Coulter's Matilija Poppy thrives in well-drained soils and full sun, often found in chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and disturbed areas. Its spectacular blooms and robust growth make it a popular choice for ornamental gardens and landscape restoration projects, providing valuable habitat and nectar for pollinators.
